What is the minimum time that emergency lighting should run for?
Emergency lighting must run for a minimum of one hour for places where the building can be evacuated immediately, such as offices, schools and workplaces. A three hour minimum is required for places like hotels, hospitals and sleeping accommodations, where immediate evacuation may not be possible.

How do emergency lights continue to run during a power cut?
Emergency lights use an internal battery backup that is usually connected to the building’s main power and so remains fully-charged for emergencies. When the main power fails, a sensor automatically detects the outage and activates the emergency lighting system.
